Projects 2017
This year, I'm excited to announce that we will be participating in the Noetic Learning Mathematics Contest. This is a national math contest whose message is to inspire young students to believe it is cool to be good at math! You can find more information about this at www.noetic-learning.com/mathcontest
Underground Railroad - We will be researching the Underground Railroad as our 1st project. Students will choose a topic that they would like to further investigate. They will then research that topic and write a research paper. We will then run a simulated "Underground Railroad" in our school for all the 4th graders to participate in. The Enrichment students will use their research to "act out" the roles of the various people that played a part in the success of the Underground Railroad.
Roadtrip - Students will be creating a "virtual" road trip for their class. They will need to choose a state. They will then do some research on the state and determine at least 3 major attractions that their classmates should visit in that state. They will need to plan how to get to the state (drive, fly, train) and then how they will travel between attractions. They will need to show maps with directions of how to get from one place to the other. They will also need to have pictures/movies of the main attractions in their state. They can decide how they would present this information or "virtual" road trip to their classmates.
Lego Mindstorms - Students will use our Lego Mindstorms set to create an object of their choice. They will construct and program their choice. Students will then display and show their peers what they created.
Quilting - Students will learn about how quilting played a role in our early history. They will then look at various quilts to gain an understanding of how they are designed. They will then create their design using graph paper and then use this to create their own quilt pieces from cloth. Students will learn to use a sewing machine and will then be the instructors for students in their own class to make their quilt projects.
